Subject: John James, Republican nominee for Governor of Michigan, 2026. U.S. Representative for MI-10 since 2023, member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce per the roster, bioguide J000307. Running mate Jay DeBoyer. Opponent Jocelyn Benson, MI-jocelyn-benson. Compiled: October 23, 2026 for the On Point Politics watchdog database, onpointpolitics.us. Research tier: Tier 2 compact. Data cutoff: October 23, 2026. Latest state filing reviewed covers July 20 to August 24, 2026. Next scheduled data drop: Michigan pre-general campaign statements due the week of October 19, 2026 per Bridge Michigan, not reviewed here; FEC reports for his House committee.

Bottom line up front

James's campaign is the smaller of the two, with $1.5 million on hand on August 24, 2026 against Benson's $5.9 million, and the RGA pulled nearly all its reserved ads in the final stretch, per Bridge Michigan on October 13, 2026. His real financial base is outside the capped campaign, in the Mission Michigan super PAC, where Dan and Pamella DeVos have given $6 million since 2025. Four interests pair money with a live decision.

  1. The DeVos family and school choice. $6 million to Mission Michigan plus $112,575 from eleven family members and RDV Corp. employees to the campaign in 2026, with some gifts over the limit fixed by spousal attribution. James wants Michigan to opt into the federal Scholarship Tax Credit, a decision only the governor can make.
  2. Walbridge and the Rakolta family, builders of the Saline data center. At least $113,850 to James committees since 2018. Walbridge is building the Saline Township data center that is the state's largest pending power decision. James backs local control and a moratorium while rules are written.
  3. Utilities. DTE and Consumers Energy were the only two 2026 donors to Mission First People Always PAC, whose treasurer is a James congressional staffer and which passed most of the money to Republican party committees. Employees and utility PACs gave about $34,000 more across his accounts. The next governor appoints the MPSC.
  4. West Michigan business families. Richard Haworth gave Mission Michigan $500,000 and the Parfets $100,000; Van Andel, Haworth and Secchia family members maxed to the campaign. His signature ask for them is a $3 billion budget cut paying for a 20 to 25 percent income tax cut.

Committee structure and treasurer

State. A gubernatorial candidate committee whose exact filed name, ID and treasurer were not found. James was the only candidate to apply for public funding, taking $258,000 by July 20, 2026 and listing $371,000 in the July 20 to August 24 report, which caps his primary spending at $2 million, per Bridge on July 25 and September 4, 2026. Do not add those two public funding figures until the filing confirms whether the second is cumulative.

Mission Michigan. A super PAC formed in April 2025 by James supporters, per Deadline Detroit on May 14, 2025, m.deadlinedetroit.com. Its compliance consultant is Crosby Ottenhoff Group of Mountain Brook, Alabama. One donor, Michigan First Inc., gave $129,000 and shares that Alabama address, per Bridge, bridgemi.com. That is a disclosure flag: the true donors behind Michigan First Inc. were not found. Mission Michigan raised $2.2 million and spent $3.9 million from January 1 to July 20, 2026, per Michigan Advance, and had spent more than $4.7 million backing James by late July.

Mission First People Always PAC. Same compliance firm; its treasurer is a James congressional staffer; its only two 2026 donors were DTE and Consumers Energy; it gave most of that to the state party and the 8th District Republican committee, per Bridge on July 25, 2026.

Federal. Candidate IDs H2MI10150 for the House and S8MI00372 for his Senate runs, from the roster. Ballotpedia, citing OpenSecrets and the FEC with no as of date, lists $9,546,139 raised in the 2024 House cycle and $48,764,414 in the 2020 Senate race, ballotpedia.org. Those are Secondary.

Campaign money by period: $3.65 million through September 30, 2025; $838,000 from October 21 to December 31, 2025 from about 8,000 donors averaging $93; $3.1 million from January 1 to July 20, 2026 while spending $4.2 million; $1.2 million private from July 20 to August 24, 2026. Spokespeople include Alyvia Bailey and Hannah Osantowske. Campaign manager was Jackson Gross per Bridge in February 2026.

The DeVos family and school choice

Documented. Dan and Pamella DeVos gave $5 million to Mission Michigan by May 2025 and $1 million more in July 2026, $6 million in all, per Bridge on July 25, 2026. Dan DeVos also maxed to the campaign at $8,325. In May 2025 the family launched Michigan Forward Network, a 501c4 that does not disclose donors, with Ronna McDaniel as CEO and Dick DeVos leading its advisory board; Bridge counted more than $80 million in family giving to Michigan campaigns and PACs over two decades and close to $28 million federal since 2019, per bridgemi.com.

What James has said. On October 12, 2026 he called for Michigan to opt into the federal Scholarship Tax Credit, which Gov. Whitmer has not done, and said "our state board of education and our superintendents are not accountable to the governor," per Michigan Public, michiganpublic.org.

Inference: The opt in is a governor's decision with no legislative step reported, which makes it the cleanest single lever for the family that funds most of his outside support. The family's new nonprofit is aimed at the Legislature, so the two vehicles cover both halves of Lansing.

Walbridge, the Rakoltas and the Saline data center

Documented. Bridge tracked at least $113,850 from the Rakolta family and Walbridge executives to James since 2018, including $97,200 to his federal campaigns and $16,650 from Lauren Rakolta and CEO Michael Haller to the governor campaign. A December 2025 fundraiser was held at a Bloomfield home Lauren Rakolta owns. Walbridge is building the Saline Township data center, which it calls its largest project ever. Bridge rated Perry Johnson's claim that James took $107,000 from data center builders "mostly accurate, though not precise," and noted most gifts predate the data center boom, per bridgemi.com.

What James has said. "The control should be by the locals, not dictated by Lansing and lawyers and lobbyists." He wants data centers on existing industrial land instead of farmland and, like Benson, backs a moratorium while rules are written, per Michigan Public on October 2, 2026. Benson says he "has voted four times to block local control." The four votes were not identified in pages read.

Inference: Both nominees are tied to the same project from different sides. Benson's household is tied to the developer and James's donors to the builder. Neither has said whether a moratorium would reach Saline.

Utilities

Documented. DTE and Consumers employees gave at least $8,616 to the governor campaign and $16,026 to prior federal accounts; utility PACs gave his House campaign $6,000 in 2025; ITC Holdings employees and PAC gave $3,000. That is nearly $34,000, below Johnson's $39,000 claim, per the Bridge fact check. The two utilities also funded the staffer run PAC described above.

Inference: The visible utility money is small, but routing corporate utility checks through a staffer led PAC to party committees is the structure Proposal 2 would end. His position on Proposal 2 was not found.

Own finances and disclosure history

No net worth estimate was found; Quiver Quantitative showed no figure. Capitol Trades lists 15 sales of $1,000 to $15,000 each between August 28 and September 4, 2024, all published September 9, 2024, in issuers including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, AbbVie and the utility Ameren, capitoltrades.com.

Enforcement and controversies

  1. Stock trade disclosure. A watchdog complaint was filed over his trades in September 2024, per the Detroit News, which could not be read. The Michigan Democratic Party says he failed to disclose 145 trades and that his family bought SpaceX stock in June while he sits on a committee that oversees the company. James said, "I never traded a single stock. But when I heard about it, we owned up to it. We went to ethics and now I'm in compliance," per Michigan Public on September 9, 2026. Status Contested.
  2. DeVos over limit gifts. Some 2026 family gifts exceeded limits and the campaign asked for spousal attribution, per Bridge.
  3. Filing posted then removed. His August report was briefly posted, pulled, and not public for over 24 hours, per Bridge on September 4, 2026. No explanation was found.
  4. Johnson lawsuit. Perry Johnson sued in Ingham County in April 2026, claiming the John James Governor logo implies incumbency. A spokesperson called it a desperate ploy, per Michigan Advance. The outcome was not found.

Votes and record

  1. H.R. 1, One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passage, Roll Call 145, May 22, 2025, passed 215 to 214: James voted Yea, clerk.house.gov.
  2. H.R. 1, motion to concur in the Senate amendment, Roll Call 190, July 3, 2025, passed 218 to 214: James voted Aye, clerk.house.gov. The next governor runs the state side of its Medicaid changes.
  3. H.R. 10759, introduced about October 6, 2026, would create a TRADE Fund from tariff revenue for manufacturer credits and loans, with 35 percent for small and midsize firms. Benson's campaign says it has no cosponsors, per michiganadvance.com.
  4. Trump endorsed him on June 22, 2026.
