Subject: Jocelyn Benson, Democratic nominee for Governor of Michigan, 2026. Sitting Michigan Secretary of State since January 1, 2019. Running mate Winnie Brinks. Opponent John James, MI-john-james. Compiled: October 23, 2026 for the On Point Politics watchdog database, onpointpolitics.us. Research tier: Tier 2 compact. Data cutoff: October 23, 2026. Latest filing reviewed covers July 20 to August 24, 2026. Next scheduled data drop: Michigan pre-general campaign statements, which Bridge Michigan said were due at the end of the week of October 19, 2026. They were not reviewed for this file.

Bottom line up front

Benson is the fundraising leader in an open seat race, with about $5.9 million cash on hand on August 24, 2026 against $1.5 million for James, and Benson and allied groups were booked to outspend James on television by roughly $23 million to $1 million heading into October, per AdImpact data reported by Bridge Michigan. Her money is broad and capped: Michigan limits gifts to $8,325 from individuals and $83,250 from PACs, so no single donor dominates her committee the way the DeVos family dominates the pro James super PAC. Four interests combine real money with a live decision on her desk.

  1. Data centers and the Saline Township project. Her husband, Ryan Friedrichs, is a vice president of development at Related Companies, whose Related Digital is developing the $7 billion, 1.4 gigawatt OpenAI and Oracle data center in Saline Township. Related chairman Stephen Ross gave her the $8,325 maximum. She has pledged a statewide moratorium on new data centers. The MPSC data center tariff case and any moratorium bill land in 2027.
  2. Organized labor. The UAW, SEIU and LIUNA each gave the $83,250 PAC maximum, and the UAW endorsed her on June 5, 2026. Building trades want the union construction jobs that data centers and state projects bring, which pulls against her moratorium pledge.
  3. Utilities. Her campaign calls her the only candidate not taking utility money, yet her August filing shows $3,000 from DTE Energy executive chairman Gerardo Norcia. The next governor appoints the MPSC, and Proposal 2 on the November 3 ballot would ban utility political donations.
  4. Health care. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan chief executive Tricia Keith and former chief executive Dan Loepp both gave the maximum. The next governor runs Medicaid implementation of the 2025 federal budget law.
  5. Party money. Gov. Whitmer's Building Bridges PAC gave $83,250 on August 20, 2026, and the DGA Victory Fund gave $80,000 on August 21, 2026, a secondary figure. A DGA associated group, Making Michigan's Future, is running ads against James.

Committee structure and treasurer

Benson runs a state candidate committee for governor. Its exact filed name, Bureau of Elections ID and treasurer were not found in any page read for this file. In 2025 the campaign moved $1.2 million from her Secretary of State committee into the governor campaign, which is why Bridge Michigan adjusted her claimed $5.7 million 2025 total down to about $4.5 million of new money, per bridgemi.com. She also established Michigan Legacy PAC, which Bridge says cannot spend independently to support her candidacy, per bridgemi.com. Michigan Legacy PAC gave to her campaign in 2025 in the $10,000 to $60,000 range, per Michigan Advance on January 2, 2026, michiganadvance.com.

Her money by period: $4.75 million raised through September 30, 2025, with $2.98 million on hand; $995,000 from October 21 to December 31, 2025, per Crain's Detroit, prod.crainsdetroit.com; $4.9 million from January 1 to July 20, 2026 with over $6.4 million on hand, per Michigan Advance, michiganadvance.com; and more than $1.8 million from July 20 to August 24, 2026 across about 17,700 contributions averaging $102, per Bridge, bridgemi.com. Adding the two 2026 periods gives about $6.7 million raised in 2026 through August 24, a derived figure. Campaign manager is Nikki Goldschein and press secretary is Rajan Srinivasan. Former Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich is reportedly leading her transition.

Documented. Ryan Friedrichs is vice president of development at Related Companies, the parent of Related Digital, which is developing a 1 gigawatt class data center in Saline Township with Oracle and OpenAI, per Michigan Advance on November 12, 2025, michiganadvance.com. The Detroit News reported he was a registered lobbyist for Related in Michigan, and the Benson campaign said that license was terminated in May 2025. Stephen Ross, chairman of Related and owner of the Miami Dolphins, gave Benson $8,325, per Crain's, prod.crainsdetroit.com. The MPSC voted on December 18, 2025 to conditionally approve DTE Electric's special contracts for the project: a power supply agreement of about 19 years with a 20 year extension option and a 15 year storage agreement for a $7 billion, 1.4 gigawatt campus on 575 acres. The MPSC also required DTE to file a generally applicable data center tariff in a contested case, per Planet Detroit, planetdetroit.org. Attorney General Dana Nessel called the decision extremely disappointing. Friedrichs said in March 2026 that he would no longer work on Related's Michigan projects, per Planet Detroit, planetdetroit.org, and Related denies he profits from the project, per Michigan Advance on July 29, 2026.

Other tech money is small and capped: Nvidia co founder Chris Malachowsky gave $8,325 in late 2025, Google AI chief Jeff Dean gave an unreported amount, and Anduril co founder Matthew Grimm gave the legal maximum in August 2026.

What she has said. Her website says, "As Governor, I will put a moratorium on data centers," and that rules must make data centers "bear the cost of additional energy usage. Not the consumer," ban them from tax breaks, require public hearings, and require union contracts, per jocelynbenson.com. On October 2, 2026 in Saline Township she said James "has voted four times to block local control" and that her husband has stepped away from Michigan projects, per Michigan Public, michiganpublic.org.

Contested. James said Benson's family "has personally benefited to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars" from data centers. Michigan Public did not verify the claim. Benson says her husband stepped away, and Related denies he profits from the project. No filing reviewed shows a dollar figure.

Inference: The household tie runs to the developer of the single largest pending data center decision in the state, while her public position is the most restrictive in the race. Her moratorium pledge and the MPSC tariff case are the two places where that tie will be tested in 2027. A moratorium that grandfathers Saline would be the outcome to watch.

Labor unions

Documented. UAW, SEIU and LIUNA each gave $83,250, the PAC maximum, by July 20, 2026, and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters gave the same, per Bridge on July 25, 2026. UFCW's Active Ballot Club gave $15,000 in late 2025. The Michigan Laborers Political League and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters gave in the $10,000 to $60,000 range in 2025. The UAW endorsed her on June 5, 2026 in a joint package with Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, saying "we need to elect a leader in Lansing that stands alongside the UAW against corporate interests," per michiganadvance.com.

What they want and the lever. The Saline project alone promises about 2,500 union construction jobs. Labor also wants the governor's posture on tariffs and auto plants, but no Benson pledge on those topics appeared in pages read.

Inference: Building trades and the environmental groups that both funded her want opposite things on data centers. Her answer so far is a moratorium paired with union contract requirements, which lets both sides read a win until a specific project comes up.

Party and leadership money

Documented. Building Bridges PAC, controlled by Gov. Whitmer, gave $83,250 on August 20, 2026. The DGA Victory Fund gave $80,000 on August 21, 2026, per Hoodline citing Bridge; this is secondary. Emily's List gave $15,000 and The Next 50 PAC gave $15,000 in late 2025. Making Michigan's Future, associated with the DGA, launched an ad called Swamp against James on September 8, 2026, per Ballotpedia citing the Detroit News. Its spending total was not found.

Inference: The party is fully consolidated behind her, and the RGA's withdrawal from Michigan, reported by Bridge on October 13, 2026, means outside money now runs almost entirely in her favor.

Own finances and disclosure history

No personal financial disclosure for Benson was located in pages read, and no third party net worth estimate was found. Her listed state salary as Secretary of State is $112,410 per Ballotpedia. Her spouse's employer, Related Companies, is the material business interest for this file. No stock trading controversy was found.

Enforcement and controversies

  1. Auditor General voter roll review. An Auditor General letter released August 28, 2026 found 321 elector records cancelled for citizenship from January 1, 2022 through March 30, 2026, and 18,523 registrants flagged as noncitizens in the state system. Of 25 sampled, 9 were confirmed noncitizens and none of the 9 had voting history. The auditor said the citizenship field alone is not enough to cancel a registration. The report does not include a Bureau of Elections response on these findings, per audgen.michigan.gov. James called it "incompetence, corruption, or both." Benson's campaign said she made Michigan "a national model for secure, transparent elections."
  2. Misprinted licenses. Thousands of driver's licenses were misprinted. The campaign blamed a third party vendor and said the department caught the error and reissued IDs, per Michigan Public on September 9, 2026.
  3. Utility money claim. Her campaign says she takes no utility money. Her August filing lists $3,000 from DTE executive chairman Gerardo Norcia, per Bridge on September 4, 2026. The campaign's response to that specific gift was not found.
